There are no ordinary people

I have been thinking a lot lately about how I see others, and I have a goal of seeing and treating others according to their potential. I just came across this quote in reading for a class and couldn't help but share it. It is amazing!

"It is a serious thing to live in a society of possible gods and goddesses, to remember that the dullest and most uninteresting person you talk to may one day be a creature which . . . you would be strongly tempted to worship, or else a horror and a corruption such as you now meet, if at all, only in a nightmare. All day long we are, in some degree, helping each other to one or other of these destinations. It is in the light of these overwhelming possibilities, it is with the awe and circumspection proper to them, that we should conduct all our dealings with one another, all friendships, all loves, all play, all politics. There are no ordinary people. You have never talked to a mere mortal. Nations, cultures, arts, civilizations—these are mortal, and their life is to ours as the life of a gnat. But it is immortals whom we joke with, work with, marry, snub, and exploit—immortal horrors or everlasting splendours."
—C. S. Lewis

  1. I love C.S. Lewis. This is a great quote. It reminds me of my mission prep book that me and Tiffany were reading last night. It talked about the sons of Mosiah, and how they went from being the very vilest of sinners, to shaking with horror at the thought of a person not receiving exaltation. It made me think about what I would consider the vilest of sinners, and then imagining them as really righteous missionaries who wanted nothing more than for others to know the joy of the gospel. It made me think more carefully about condemning people in my mind - that I should be eager to bring them along with me - not to see them as a road block to my personal, selfish salvation!
